Pretty much every frequenter of YouTube knows “FЯED” (the character known as Fred Figglehorn) created and voiced by Nebraska’s own, now 17-year-old Lucas Cruikshank.
Fred, who was supposedly 6 when the character was born in 2006, made Cruikshank the youngest ever to achieve most-subscribed YouTube channel status in 2009 (Fred gave the title up to the NigaHiga channel in 2010).
In addition to the incredible popularity of the Fred Channel, Cruikshank has enjoyed other fame including several appearances on TV series (notably iCarly) and talk shows, and a feature-length Fred movie that will be aired by Nickelodeon in September 2010.
More fame is on the way for Cruikshank. In August 2010, Nickelodeon announced that he’s slated to star in a new half-hour sitcom on the network titled Marvin, Marvin. The lead character, Marvin, is described by creator and Executive Producer Jon Ross (of 10 Things I Hate About You) as “a new kid in school who is a bit odd.” This persona shouldn’t be much of an acting stretch for Cruikshank, who portrays Fred Figglehorn as a somewhat wacky misfit member of a dysfunctional family with lots of anger management issues.
The new show is part of the package deal Nick cut with Cruikshank that included the iCarly spot. Does this move mark a new era for young YouTubers, where the talented will be snapped up by TV networks seeking to tap into the youth market share? And how long will the Fred Channel keep up as its mastermind moves on to new projects? Time will tell.
